SUMMARY:THE STRANGER
DESCRIPTION:The superb new film from multi-award winning writer/director François Ozon\, The Stranger is a gripping adaptation of Albert Camus’ landmark novella about a detached young expat under trial for murder in French-colonised Algeria. Set in a blistering hot summer in 1938\, and with a stunning cast\, this received four César Award nominations. \nVisually resplendent with sensuous black-and-white images\, Ozon’s masterfully realised film shines a contemporary lens on Camus’ classic tale of dissociation and morality. Must-see French cinema of the highest order. \n

SUMMARY:WOLFRAM
DESCRIPTION:Warwick Thornton’s ‘Wolfram’ unfolds in 1932 Central Australia and is the follow-up film to his acclaimed ‘Sweet Country’ (2017). Aboriginal children are forced into “wolfram” (tungsten) mining until violence entangles them with ruthless outlaws. At the heart of the story is Pansy (Deborah Mailman) who is longing for her stolen children. \nA tightly wrought frontier western rooted in real family history\, ‘Wolfram’ sees Aboriginal siblings Max and Kid forced to work in the mines under Billy’s control. When Billy dies suddenly\, Max is kidnapped by outlaws Frank and Casey\, while Kid refuses to let him go. At Kennedy’s station\, the brothers encounter Philomac\, the boy from ‘Sweet Country’ (2017)\, now older and indentured. Brought together by circumstance\, the three seize a fragile chance to escape before dawn\, pursued by Kennedy and the outlaws in a relentless chase across the desert. Along the way they find temporary refuge with Chinese miners Shi and Jimmi. At the story’s emotional core is Pansy\, a mother longing for the return of her lost generation. ‘Wolfram’ is a taut western of kinship\, survival and colonial reckoning in the Central Desert.

SUMMARY:Locals' Night: FIGHT CLUB (1999)
DESCRIPTION:Remastered in 4K! \nThe first rule of Fight Club is you don’t talk about Fight Club\, which leaves us in kind of a pickle when it comes to writing a synopsis. \nBut\, what we will say is that David Fincher’s iconic satire is a must-see film event starring Brad Pitt\, Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter in an adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s bestselling novel. A box office disappointment upon release\, this incendiary film has been accused of many things over the past twenty one years. But it’s a big boy now and is old enough to defend itself\, so enjoy this rare opportunity to experience it on the cinema screen – you won’t regret it. \nThis is an 18+ screening.

SUMMARY:Special Event: EDGE OF LIFE
DESCRIPTION:The doorway to death is the last great frontier in human life. Intellectually\, we all know our lives will end\, and yet – in the Western world at least – we act as if death is a mirage\, disappearing the closer we move towards it. Two doctors in Australia are using psilocybin to help ease the anguish of their patients at the end of life\, and the results they have seen are truly remarkable. But this visioning tool\, like other plant medicines\, is not new; it comes from ancient traditions. \nWhen the doctors journey to the Amazon to experience traditional medicines for themselves\, they are confronted by realisations they have no explanation for. Is it possible the world’s oldest cultures have something important to teach us\, not just about traditional medicines\, but about death itself? \nScreening hosted by the Australian Psychedelic Society. $5 from every ticket sold goes towards supporting the APS to fulfil its mission.

SUMMARY:PIKE RIVER
DESCRIPTION:Three-time Emmy nominee Melanie Lynskey (YELLOWJACKETS\, THE LAST OF US) and acclaimed NZ actress Robyn Malcolm (TOP OF THE LAKE\, AFTER THE PARTY) star as Anna Osborne and Sonya Rockhouse; two ordinary women who together stand up and take on the government\, justice system and a company that will stop at nothing to protect itself\, after the 2010 Pike River Mine explosion takes the lives of 29 men underground. \nThis is a film about the powerless vs. the powerful\, of people vs. money\, of right vs. wrong. An inspiring true story of an incredible female friendship and together what is possible when you simply won’t give up.

Covering his meteoric rise through unseen footage and interviews with his mother\, friends\, and other musicians\, Berg’s comprehensive and delicate documentary pays tribute to this truly singular artist. \nTwo sessions only!
