SUMMARY:UNIVERSAL HORROR DOUBLE FEATURE
DESCRIPTION:Universal Horror Double Feature: The Invisible Man (1933) + Bride of Frankenstein (1935) \nJoin us at the Theatre Royal this All Hallow’s Eve as we celebrate the glorious period that was Universal Horror of the early Hollywood Golden Age. Some would argue that we are experiencing a renewal of Universal’s great horror films\, but there really was nothing at all like those first years of talking pictures when experimentations with sound film equalled the great sci-fi experimentations with bodies\, invisibility\, and invincibility. \nTo celebrate\, we have a double feature of James Whale classics that are guaranteed to tingle. Starting off at 7pm\, The Invisible Man (1933)\, in which Claude Rains plays a maniacal stranger who has made himself invisible with an experimental serum. Properly chilling in its pre-Code content\, and with a very cinematic storm that would become so important to the horror film over the next 100+ years\, this is a true essential of the era. \nThen\, after a short intermission\, we’ll be back for more at 8.30pm with Bride of Frankenstein (1935). The first and most infamous sequel to Frankenstein (1931)\, this stars Elsa Lanchester in an unforgettble dual role of Mary Shelley and The Bride\, amping up the story’s spookiness while introducing more humanity to the horror. Adding to this\, Franz Waxman’s score was one of the most artistically and culturally significant of the period. \nWith make-up and special effects that have to be seen to be believed\, it’ll be a spectacularly spooky evening; as Richard O’Brien would sing in his great homage\, “at the late night\, double feature\, picture show (in the back row).” \nA ticket will grant you entry to both films or just one\, it’s up to you!
